Effective Management of Fall Armyworm in Maize

Maize Introduction - Maize ( Zea mays) is commonly referred to as Corn. Which is an important cereal crop in the world belonging to the grass family. The majority of Farmers became aware of fall armyworm in 2017. Nowadays the rate of spread and damage caused by fall armyworm has increased at a faster rate leading to heavy yield loss.
Fall Armyworm - Spodoptera frugiperda is a destructive pest. It originated in America, and recently invaded India. The estimated economic loss due to damage was around 16-18 Percent. The incidence of this pest was first observed in Shivamogga, Karnataka in 2018. Later on, it was reported in the states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh Bihar, West Bengal, Gujarat, and Kerala at an Alarming rate.
Climate suitable for pests: The average temperature is between 25 and 30°C with an annual rainfall of 1,100-2,400 mm and relative humidity of 85% in the south and 71% in the north which means that fall armyworm would be able to have uninterrupted generations.
Damaging Symptoms:
The insect is devastating at pre tasseling stage. They generally eat on leaves by making small holes. window pane feeding pattern that is feeding on the emerging leaves from the whorl. Under severe infestation, the leaf tissue is damaged heavily causing a ragged appearance. At the reproductive stage Both the tassel and cob are totally damaged.
Management: Beneficial insects, such as lacewings, ladybugs, and minute pirate bugs may be encouraged.
