Coconut is also referred to as ‘Kalpa Vriksha’. It is an important multipurpose perennial crop of the tropics. Which plays a significant role in the agrarian economy. India is the third largest producer of coconut in the world. Coconut production is hindered by several pests of which eriophyid mite, the rhinoceros beetle, red palm weevil, black headed caterpillar and white-grub are noteworthy. During the year 2016 a minor pest of coconut called Rugose Spiralling Whitefly was reported from pollachi and palakkad regions of Tamil Nadu and Kerala states respectively, which jeopardized the coconut industry in India. Plantation infected with whitefly will hinder nut production and decline the quantity and quality of nuts.

Late blight is a big issue for tomato and potato producers since it is a destructive disease that can result in crop losses of up to 70%. Late blight has also been documented to have infected other solanaceous crops, although the impact is less severe.
